Autumn Paws: A Fall Wellness Guide for Your Furry Friend

As fall approaches, there are several wellness factors to consider for your dog to stay healthy and comfortable. Here are some to keep in mind:

  1. Grooming: As the weather cools some breeds will start to shed their summer coats. Regular grooming will help with shedding and keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy. Check for any skin irritations or pests hiding under the fur.
  2. Flea and tick prevention: Fleas and ticks are still active in the fall. Continue using preventative measures like oral medication, topical treatments or flea sprays on your dog.
  3. Joint health: Colder temperatures can affect dogs, especially older ones, with joint issues like arthritis. Keep an eye on your dog’s mobility and consider joint supplements or comfortable bedding to ease any discomfort.
  4. Diet and exercise: With less daylight and cooler weather you may need to adjust your dog’s exercise and diet. Sufficient exercise is key to overall health and weight management.
  5. Seasonal allergies: Some dogs will experience allergies from environmental factors like mold and pollen in the fall. Watch for signs of allergies like itching, sneezing or skin irritation and consult with your vet for treatment.
  6. Outdoor safety: As hunting seasons start in the fall make sure you and your dog are visible to hunters by wearing bright or reflective clothing and accessories if you’re in hunting areas or near woods.

Many people schedule their dog’s routine vet visits in the spring and fall but it can vary dog to dog and make sure your pet has regular visits according to their health needs.
